2014 - The Wash Up

Organisers of this year’s Narrathon were more than a little nervous on the weekend prior to the event, as Sydney’s coastline was again subject to huge seas and dangerous conditions that would have seen the event called off. Fortunately, conditions eased during the week with by far the very best conditions presenting themselves – on Thursday! ANZAC Day saw the southerly pick up for a again, dampening the spirits of all but the hardiest of returned service men and women. By race day however, the wind and swell had turned more to the nor’east, and we had a good day on our hands. With twenty-five individuals and twenty teams registered, the scene was set for the running of the 5th Narrathon.

Special mention is owed to those who made their way to Narrabeen from further afield, particularly Darren Browning from Batemans Bay, and James Haigh from Port Kembla. A little closer to home, we had a strong contingent from Bondi, North Bondi and Coogee – a big thanks to Fiona Tschaut, Matt Malcom, Josep Font Sadurni, Paul Jefferson, Emily Gillies, Amy Teale, Line Praest Lauridsen, Louise Santos, and Lia Trebilcock for joining us at Narrabeen this year.

The friendly rivalry between teams from Mona Vale and Warriewood was overshadowed this year by teams from south of the Harbour Bridge. Mona Vale had The Magificent Mona's, Mona Magic, and Mona Vallis Victorium. Warriewood was represented by teams Warriewood, Warriewood Wackos, Wazza There, Warriewood Rustys and Team Lynch. Bondi, however, had teams Everything is Awesome, the Bondi Young and not so Young Gals, the Bondi Chicks, the Bondi Cadets 2014, The Bondi 1 Male Team, and Bondi 6… 6 teams!

After two friendly protests and a lengthy deliberation by the Stewards, the results were in. In truth, it took us about 20 minutes to find out that an individual competitor had forgotten to remove his timing chip after finishing, and had then inadvertently walked over the finish line timing sensor a number of times after finishing, which confused both the electronics and the organisers. Please click on the results menu item at left to view the full list of results.

Overall female category winner was Amy Teale, and overall male category winner was Marc Pasques. The winning female team was The Bondi Chicks, the winning male team was Shake’n’Bake, and the winning mixed team was the Warriewood Wacko’s.

A huge thank you to everyone who competed in this year’s event, as well as to all of the work parties, catering volunteers, co-ordinators and water safety personnel who helped to make this year’s event another successful and enjoyable day.

Tell your friends, urge your club-mates to get a team together, and help us make this event bigger and more fun for next year. See you in April next year!
